Chanson composée par Turner Layton avec des paroles de Henry Cramer, sortie en 1918. Le tempo est modéré et la chanson subit une influence du blues et du jazz. Les paroles parlent de la difficulté de se retrouver seul.

Le premier enregistrement est celui de Henry Burr et Albert Campbell en 1918 puis vient la version solo de la chanteuse de cabaret Marion Harris qui reçoit un bon accueil commercial. Le titre deviendra populaire 9 ans plus tard en 1927 avec les versions de Bessie Smith et de Sophie Tucker.

Le tempo s'accélère avec les groupes California ramblers et Charleston chasers démontrant que cette chanson peut être un vrai titre de hot jazz.

De nombreux artistes l'enregistreront et cette chanson deviendra un standard de jazz.
