Avant les années 1950, peu de musiciens reprennent ce titre, jusqu’à ce que deux trompettistes contribuent à faire de My Funny Valentine un standard du jazz : Chet Baker et Miles Davis.
L’histoire de Chet Baker est étroitement liée à celle de My Funny Valentine. Le trompettiste enregistre le titre une première fois en 1952 avec Gerry Mulligan. Il en réalise une version dans la mouvance du cool jazz, épurée, dans laquelle la mélodie montante de la trompette est soutenue par la basse immuable du contrebassiste Carson Smith en noires descendantes. My Funny Valentine devient l’une des chansons préférées de Baker qui l’interprètera à presque tous ses concerts (souvent, au cours de ses jeunes années, devant un parterre d’admiratrices en pâmoison...), dans des versions instrumentales ou vocales, et l’enregistre à de nombreuses reprises (on compte environ 40 versions enregistrées dans sa discographie). source
